He is also named with the admiring nickname as Mahakavi (Great Poet) Bharathi owing to his great influence to Tamil literature. In his short life span of 39 years, Bharathi left an unforgettable mark as the poet of Tamil nationalism and Indian freedom. Bharathi often denoted to Tamil as his 'mother'. At the same time, he was articulate in many languages including Bengali, Hindi, Sanskrit and English and often translated works from other languages into Tamil. Bharathi was creative and proficient in both the prose and poetry forms. His masterpieces were directed to stimulate the masses in the region of South India to backing the Indian independence movement.
